Equity is the narrow pillar that holds the others honest. If AI help is only available to students with a phone, a data plan, and a quiet room at home, the school has just widened the gap. This module makes access a design decision, not a hope.
The equity trap
Allow AI but leave access to chance, and the students who benefit are the ones who already had the most: their own device, home internet, and a parent who can guide them. The students who most need the school's help are the ones locked out. Equity here is not a values statement. It is a budget line and a timetable decision.
Provision, not permission
The answer is supervised access on school devices and school time, so a student without a phone or home internet is not shut out of a skill their classmates are building. This does not require a device for every child on day one. It requires a plan: booked lab time, a set of shared devices, and approved tools that work without personal accounts where possible.
Support without lowering the bar
Used well, AI can widen access to the curriculum: a patient explainer for a student who needs an idea three different ways, a reader for text that would otherwise be a barrier, a translation bridge for a new arrival. The discipline is to use these to help more students reach the same high standard, not to quietly expect less of some of them.
What the frameworks say
Fairness is one of the six principles in the Australian Framework, which asks that AI use be accessible and inclusive and does not disadvantage any group. The AILit Framework frames AI literacy as an entitlement for all learners, not an advantage for some.
