I have built AI systems in Jamaica since 2011, and I test every major AI assistant as part of my work. Claude, made by Anthropic, is one of the tools I use most. Nobody pays me to say so. This guide covers how to get Claude from Jamaica, what it does well and badly, how to write prompts that get useful answers, and how a business should trial it.
What Claude is
Claude is a large language model: it reads and writes text, and can also read images, PDFs and spreadsheets you upload. Anthropic was founded in 2021 by former OpenAI staff and puts heavy emphasis on safety research. In my use, Claude is more willing than most assistants to say when it does not know something, though it still makes mistakes.
Its context window, the amount of text it can hold in one conversation, is at least 200,000 tokens, roughly a 500-page book. That makes it strong at reading long documents in one go: a full contract, an annual report or a thesis.
How to get Claude in Jamaica

No VPN is needed. Claude.ai works on any internet connection in Jamaica, from New Kingston to rural St Elizabeth. You sign up with an email address, and consumer accounts are for people aged 18 and over.
Jamaican Visa and Mastercard cards usually work for the Pro subscription. If yours is declined, the usual cause is that international online transactions are switched off on the card, which your bank can turn on.
Developers create an account on Anthropic's developer console, generate an API key and call Claude from Python, JavaScript or another language. Claude Code runs in your terminal or editor and can read, edit and run code in your project. Anything Claude or Claude Code reads is sent to Anthropic's servers for processing, so treat it as you would any cloud service.
What Claude does well
Writing and editing
Claude holds structure and tone well over long documents. It will not write a perfect first draft, but given a clear brief it produces a solid draft of a report, proposal or training material that you can correct. It can shift register from formal letters to a ministry to plain community notices when you tell it the audience.
Reading long documents
Upload a 100-page government report, a contract or a set of financial statements and ask for a summary, a list of obligations, or a comparison with another document. A lawyer can get a first pass at contract issues, an accountant a list of figures to check, a civil servant the key changes in a new policy. Each still needs a professional to confirm the output.
Code
Claude writes, explains and debugs code in Python, JavaScript, Java, C++ and most other common languages. A junior developer gets explanations and code review on demand, and a solo developer can take on larger projects. I see Jamaican developers doing both now.
Explaining and analysing
Claude is good at explaining a technical idea in plain language, comparing arguments and structuring an analysis. That makes it useful for learning as well as for work.
Where Claude falls short
- Current information: its built-in knowledge stops at a training cut-off date. Claude.ai can search the web when that feature is on, but check dates and sources for anything recent.
- Accuracy: it can be wrong, sometimes confidently. Have a qualified person check anything involving money, law, medicine or calculations that matter.
- Images: it can read images but does not generate photographs or artwork. It can write prompts for image tools and build simple charts and diagrams in code.
- Local detail: it knows Jamaica's general facts but not the current opening hours of a tax office or last month's policy change. Verify anything specific and local.
How to write prompts that work
The gap between mediocre and useful output is mostly in the prompt.
- Give the context. Not "write me a business plan", but: "I am starting a food processing business in Clarendon, turning mango, guava and soursop into shelf-stable products for the Jamaican diaspora in the US, Canada and UK. We have J$2 million in capital and three staff. Write a first-year plan with monthly milestones, projections in JMD and USD, and ways to reach diaspora buyers."
- Assign a role. "Act as a senior financial analyst reviewing this quarterly report" gets sharper output than "analyse this report".
- Specify format and length. Ask for five bullet points, a 500-word summary or a table comparing four options.
- Iterate. Ask it to shorten, add examples, change the tone or restructure. Two or three rounds of correction usually beat one long prompt.
- Upload the source. Give it the PDF, spreadsheet or code file instead of describing it. Answers grounded in your document are more accurate than answers from memory.
Uses by role
- Students: explanations of hard topics, essay structure, debugging assignments, quizzing yourself before exams.
- Entrepreneurs: business plans, proposals, marketing copy, first-draft financial models, and stress tests of a strategy against objections.
- Professionals: emails, reports, meeting summaries, presentation outlines, research notes.
- Developers: code generation, review, documentation and learning new frameworks; Claude Code for work inside a repository.
- Teachers: lesson plans, assessment questions, explanations pitched at different levels, material aligned to CSEC and CAPE syllabuses.
Claude's answers depend on the instructions you give it. A clear, specific prompt with context gets a useful answer; a vague one gets a generic answer.
How a Jamaican business should trial Claude
Team and Enterprise plans add central billing, user management, admin controls and, by default, an exclusion of your data from model training. Financial services, legal, consulting and technology firms are the natural first users.
Do not buy seats for everyone on day one. Give Claude Pro to three to five staff for one month, choose two or three recurring tasks each, and record how long those tasks took before and during the trial, along with any errors. Expand only if the numbers justify it.
Prompt templates for Jamaican contexts

- Individuals: sign up for the free tier at claude.ai today and run one real task from your week, such as summarising a long document. Use the context-role-format method above.
- Heavy users: if you hit the free limits three or more times in a week, upgrade to Pro (about US$20 a month) and check in settings whether your chats may be used for model training.
- Business owners: run the one-month, five-person trial above, with before-and-after timings for named tasks, before buying a Team plan.
- Compliance officers: before staff paste customer data into any AI tool, write a one-page rule on what may and may not be shared, in line with Jamaica's Data Protection Act 2020.
- Developers: create an API key, set a monthly spending limit in the console, and build one small internal tool before committing a client project to it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Anthropic use my Claude conversations to train its models?
On consumer plans (Free, Pro and Max) you choose in your privacy settings whether your chats can be used to improve future models, so check that setting after you sign up. Team, Enterprise and API data is not used for training by default under Anthropic's commercial terms. Either way, your conversations are processed on Anthropic's servers, so do not paste client records or trade secrets into a personal account.
Can I pay for Claude Pro in Jamaican dollars?
No, it is billed in US dollars, and your bank converts the charge and may add a foreign transaction fee. If your card is declined, ask your bank to enable international e-commerce transactions. Subscribing through the Apple App Store or Google Play on your phone is an alternative, though app store prices can be higher.
What are Projects in Claude, and when should I use them?
A Project is a workspace where you store documents and standing instructions that Claude reads in every conversation inside it. A small business might keep its price list, brand guide and standard terms in one Project so every draft uses them. Check Anthropic's current plan page for which tiers include Projects and how much they hold.
How should I choose between Claude, ChatGPT and Gemini?
Test them on your own work rather than relying on reviews. Take three or four real tasks you do every week, run the same prompt in each tool's free tier for a week, and keep the one whose answers need the least correction. Gemini connects closely to Gmail and Google Docs, ChatGPT generates images, and Claude is strong on long documents and code, so the right answer depends on your tasks.
Can Claude write in Jamaican Patois?
It understands a good deal of Patois and can write in Jamaican Standard English with local references when you ask. Its written Patois is unreliable in spelling and idiom, because there is little written Patois in its training data. For anything public, have a fluent speaker edit the draft.
