I have taught AI in Jamaica for seven years, and the question I hear most is still "How do I use ChatGPT?" This guide answers it: how to sign up, whether to pay, how to ask for what you want, and where it goes wrong.

What ChatGPT is, and what it is not

ChatGPT, made by OpenAI, is a program you talk to in ordinary language. You type or speak a request and it writes a reply: an email, an explanation, a lesson plan, a block of code, a translation, a list of ideas.

It is a large language model. It was trained on a huge amount of text and produces its answers by predicting what should come next. That is why it writes fluently and why it can be fluently wrong. Treat it as a fast, well-read assistant whose work you check, not as an authority.

How to sign up in two minutes

  1. Open a browser on your phone or computer and go to chatgpt.com, or install the official ChatGPT app from the App Store or Google Play. The publisher should be OpenAI.
  2. Choose "Sign up". You can use an email address or a Google, Microsoft or Apple account; Google is quickest if you have one.
  3. If you used email, open the verification message from OpenAI and click the link.
  4. Enter your name and date of birth when asked.
  5. Type your first message in the box at the bottom of the screen.

No VPN or special software is needed. ChatGPT works on any internet connection in Jamaica.

Free or paid: what the difference buys you

Start free. Pay only when you keep hitting the limits.

FreePlus (about US$20 a month)

Most capable modelsLimited accessFuller access

OpenAI changes model names and plan features every few months, so check the plans page before you pay. What stays true is the trade: Plus buys more use of the strongest models.

Plus at US$20 is roughly J$3,100, depending on the exchange rate and any foreign transaction fee your bank adds. It pays for itself if it saves you two hours a month and your time is worth more than about J$1,550 an hour. Most students and casual users will not need it.

Paying from Jamaica: use a Visa or Mastercard credit or debit card enabled for international online payments. NCB, Scotiabank and CIBC FirstCaribbean cards generally work. If yours is declined, call the bank and ask them to switch on international online transactions; many Jamaican banks keep it off by default.

Your first three prompts

A blank box is the hardest part. Try these in order:

  1. "I am a [your job] in Jamaica. Give me five specific ways you could save me time at work, with an example request for each."
  2. Pick one of its suggestions and ask for it. A teacher might type: "Create a 45-minute Grade 9 lesson plan on [topic], with an opening activity, main teaching points, a student activity and one assessment question."
  3. Ask for a change: "Make it shorter and add a Jamaican example." The second and third replies are usually better than the first.

Five rules for better answers

These are the rules I teach in my free weekly AI training.

  1. Give context. "Write a cover letter" gets a template. "I am a marketing professional in Kingston with five years in digital and social media, applying for a Senior Marketing Manager role at a tourism company that wants Caribbean tourism experience and team leadership. Write a one-page cover letter" gets a letter you can send after editing.
  2. Say what shape you want. A table, bullet points, numbered steps, under 200 words, a warm but professional tone.
  3. Give it a role. "Act as a patient maths tutor" or "act as an HR manager reviewing this policy" changes the depth and tone of the answer.
  4. Revise in conversation. "More formal." "Cut this in half." "Expand the marketing section." Three rounds of edits beat one perfect prompt.
  5. Check facts before you use them. It states wrong facts confidently and sometimes invents sources. Verify numbers, dates, laws, prices and anything medical before you rely on them.

Where it earns its keep in Jamaica

TaskExample requestWhat to check
Business email"Draft a reply to a supplier in Miami asking to move delivery from the 10th to the 17th. Firm but friendly."Dates and names
Study help"Explain photosynthesis for CSEC Biology, then give me five practice questions with answers at the end."Against your syllabus and notes
Business planning"I run a jerk food truck in Montego Bay and want a second location. Give me a checklist of what to sort out first."Permits and costs with the parish council and your accountant
Social media"Write five Instagram captions for a Kingston bakery's new sorrel cake, under 30 words each."Tone and prices
Coding"Explain this error message and suggest a fix" (paste the error)Run the code; never paste passwords or keys

Use it to learn, not to hand in its work. A student who asks for an explanation and practice questions gets better. One who submits its essay learns nothing and risks a failed assessment.

Four mistakes I see most

  • Using it as Google. It can search the web now, but it still mixes search results with what it remembers. For a current price, a law or a schedule, go to the official source.
  • Being vague. "Help me with my business" gets generic advice. Name the business, the town, the goal and the constraint.
  • Stopping at the first answer. Most of the value is in the second and third exchange.
  • Trusting it on health, law or money. Use it to prepare questions for a doctor, lawyer or accountant, not to replace them.

Custom GPTs: a tool built for one job

A custom GPT is a version of ChatGPT you set up for one task, with your instructions and your documents, and no coding. Building one needs a paid plan. A small hotel could load its room types, policies and FAQs so staff can answer guest questions quickly. A school department could load its schemes of work so students get help that matches the syllabus.

Set-up takes an afternoon. Keep personal data about guests, students or customers out of the documents you upload.

Prompt templates you can copy

Replace the bracketed parts and paste them into ChatGPT.

I am a [profession] in [parish], Jamaica. I need to write a [proposal / report / letter / email] to [recipient]. The purpose is [what you want to happen]. Include these points: [list them]. Tone: [formal / friendly]. Keep it to about [number] words.
Act as an experienced business mentor who knows the Jamaican market. I am starting a [type of business] in [town]. My starting capital is J$[amount]. My customers are [describe]. Draft a first-year plan with monthly revenue and expense estimates, marketing through local channels, and the biggest risks I face. Mark every figure you are guessing so I can check it.
I am studying [subject] at [school or university] in Jamaica. Explain [topic] in plain language, give me an example from Jamaica or the Caribbean, then write five multiple-choice questions with the answers and explanations at the end.
I work in a BPO in Jamaica as a [customer service agent / data entry operator / quality analyst]. Tell me which parts of my job AI tools can already do and which still need a person. Then give me a six-month plan to build skills in the second group, using free resources, for about three hours a week.
I have an interview for [role] at a [type of company] in Jamaica. List the ten questions I am most likely to be asked, draft a short answer to each using my background below, and suggest two questions I should ask them. My background: [paste a summary of your CV].

What to do next

  1. If you have never used it: sign up free at chatgpt.com today and run the three starter prompts above. It takes 15 minutes.
  2. If you use it casually: for one week, write every prompt with context, a format and a length. Keep the prompts that work in a notes file so you can reuse them.
  3. If you are deciding whether to pay: note how often the free limits stop you over two weeks. If it happens more than twice a week and the work matters, Plus at about US$20 a month is worth it.
  4. If you run a business: write a one-page rule for staff this month: what they may use ChatGPT for, and that customer names, account numbers and ID details never go into it without approval.
  5. Teachers and parents: agree with students which tasks allow AI help, and ask them to hand in their prompts with the work.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I stop ChatGPT from using my conversations to train its models?

Open Settings, go to Data controls, and switch off the option labelled "Improve the model for everyone". This works on free and paid personal accounts. For a single sensitive conversation, start a Temporary Chat, which is not saved to your history or used for training. Business plans such as ChatGPT Enterprise exclude business data from training by default.

Does Jamaica's Data Protection Act affect how my business uses ChatGPT?

Yes. The Data Protection Act, 2020 came into force in December 2023, and it applies when you put customers' or staff members' personal data into any outside service, ChatGPT included. You need a lawful basis for that processing and you remain responsible for it, so the safe default is to remove names, TRNs, account numbers and contact details before pasting text in. The Office of the Information Commissioner oversees the Act and publishes guidance for organisations.

Can students use ChatGPT for CSEC and CAPE coursework?

Only within the rules their school and the Caribbean Examinations Council set for each assessment, so check CXC's current guidance on AI and ask the teacher before starting a school-based assessment. Using it to explain a topic or generate practice questions is study help. Submitting its text as your own work is treated as malpractice, and teachers are increasingly asking students to show drafts and prompts.

Does ChatGPT understand Jamaican Patois?

It understands a good deal of Patois and can reply in it, but its written Patois is uneven and often reads like an outsider's imitation. For anything public, such as an advert or a radio script, have a native speaker check it. It is more reliable at the reverse job: explaining a Patois phrase in standard English.

How can I check whether an answer from ChatGPT is correct?

Ask it for sources, then open those sources yourself and confirm they say what it claims; invented references are a known failure. For Jamaican rules and figures, go to the official body: Tax Administration Jamaica for tax, the relevant ministry or agency on gov.jm for regulations, and the Bank of Jamaica for exchange rates. If an answer matters and you cannot find it confirmed in an official source, do not rely on it.

Is there a risk of fake ChatGPT apps?

Yes. App stores regularly carry look-alike apps that charge subscriptions for access to what is free on chatgpt.com. Install only the app published by OpenAI, and never enter card details anywhere except inside the official app or website. If you were charged by a copycat, cancel through your App Store or Google Play subscriptions page and ask your bank about a chargeback.
