I have run a free AI training session in Jamaica every week for seven years, more than 350 sessions. The question I am asked most is "Where do I start?" This guide answers it by starting point, because a UWI computer science graduate, a BPO agent and a shop owner need different routes. Everything listed can be started from Jamaica for free; where a certificate or exam costs money, I say so.
Free training run in Jamaica
My free weekly AI sessions
Every week I run a free online session open to anyone, whatever their background. Topics range from what AI is and how to use the common tools, to machine learning concepts and business uses. Teachers, bankers, farmers, students, civil servants, retirees and founders have attended; thousands of Jamaicans in total. There is no fee and no prerequisite. To join, contact me through StarApple AI at starappleai.org or on LinkedIn.
The Genius Project
The Genius Project is a Jamaican technology education initiative with AI and data science components, aimed at young people and organised as structured learning paths.
The best free online courses, by level
| Course | Level | What it costs |
|---|---|---|
| Elements of AI (University of Helsinki) | Beginner, no maths or code | Free, including certificate |
| Google AI Essentials | Beginner, using AI tools at work | Course on Coursera; certificate needs a subscription or financial aid |
| IBM SkillsBuild AI courses | Beginner to intermediate | Free, with digital badges |
| Microsoft Learn: Azure AI Fundamentals path | Beginner, cloud AI services | Learning path free; the AI-900 exam has a fee |
| Kaggle Learn micro-courses (Python, pandas, intro to ML) | Beginner coding | Free, with certificates |
| Andrew Ng's Machine Learning Specialization (Coursera) | Intermediate | Many lessons can be audited free; certificate paid or via financial aid |
| CS50's Introduction to AI with Python (Harvard, on edX) | Intermediate, needs Python | Free to take; verified certificate paid |
| fast.ai Practical Deep Learning for Coders | Intermediate to advanced, needs Python | Free |
Coursera has reduced free audit access on some professional certificates, so check the course page before you plan around it. Its financial aid application is the reliable route to a free certificate.
On YouTube, 3Blue1Brown explains neural networks and linear algebra visually, StatQuest covers statistics and machine learning concepts clearly, and Sentdex has practical Python tutorials. Stay with established channels; much of the rest is low quality.
University and national training options
UWI Mona. The Department of Computing offers courses in machine learning, data science and AI within its computer science programmes. The curriculum moves in years while the field moves in months, so UWI supplements it with industry guest lectures and workshops. If you are a UWI student, take the formal courses, add the online courses above, and build projects. Employers in Jamaica ask to see working projects.
UTech. Its technology programmes include data science and programming with a practical, industry focus, which suits graduates heading for applied AI jobs.
NCU. Its information technology programmes give the computing and data foundation to move into AI with further study.
HEART/NSTA Trust. Jamaica's national training agency offers IT and software development courses that build the foundation AI work needs. Check HEART's current course list for AI-specific offerings, which have been expanding. For anyone without a university place, HEART fundamentals followed by the free online AI courses above is a realistic, low-cost route.
Learning paths by starting point
Complete beginner, no technical background
- Weeks 1–4: attend the free weekly sessions and complete Elements of AI or Google AI Essentials. Aim: know what AI can and cannot do.
- Weeks 5–12: take IBM SkillsBuild's AI fundamentals and start Python with Kaggle Learn. Aim: basic literacy and first code.
- Months 4–6: audit Andrew Ng's Machine Learning course and build one small project from a tutorial.
Technical background, no AI experience
- Weeks 1–4: start fast.ai, refreshing Python as you go. Aim: a working deep learning model in the first month.
- Weeks 5–12: take one specialised course (language, vision or data science) and build two or three portfolio projects on Jamaican data.
- Months 4–6: contribute to an open-source project, take freelance work, and apply for roles.
Business owner or manager
- Weeks 1–2: Google AI Essentials plus one weekly session. Aim: enough understanding to judge vendor claims.
- Weeks 3–6: use Claude, ChatGPT or Gemini daily on real tasks: drafting, summarising, analysing sales data.
- Months 2–3: pilot one AI tool in one process and measure time or cost before and after.
What makes people quit, and how to avoid it
Most people who stop do so at the first hard concept, usually the maths. Practical AI work needs statistics, some linear algebra and a little calculus, at roughly first-year university science level. It is learnable, and for using AI tools rather than building models you need little of it.
Internet access is the other barrier, especially in rural parishes. Download course videos when you have a good connection and study offline; the Coursera and YouTube apps both allow downloads. Google Colab runs Python in the browser, so you do not need a powerful computer, but it does need a connection while you work.
The part I am least sure about is jobs. Free courses teach the skills, but the number of AI roles in Jamaica is still small, and many graduates of these courses will use them in their current jobs or work remotely for overseas firms rather than join a local AI team.
Prompts to plan your learning
I am a [profession] in Jamaica with [beginner/intermediate/advanced] technical skills and [X] hours a week to study. Build a 12-week AI learning plan using only free resources. Name the specific course for each week, one project to build, and a milestone to check progress. Focus on skills relevant to [industry] in Jamaica. If you are unsure whether a course is still free, say so.
Explain [neural networks / gradient descent / embeddings] to me as a bright student with CSEC-level maths. Use an everyday Jamaican example. Then give me three short exercises and the answers separately.
Suggest a portfolio project for [Jamaican tourism / agriculture / financial services / health] that uses publicly available data, takes two to four weeks, and shows skills a Jamaican employer would value. List the data sources so I can check they exist.
I have an interview for a data or AI role at [type of company] in Jamaica. List the technical questions I should prepare for, the projects I should be able to explain, and a one-week preparation plan.
What to do next
- Complete beginners: this week, enrol in Elements of AI (free and self-paced) and join one of my weekly sessions. Block two fixed hours a week in your calendar.
- Anyone who wants a paid certificate free: apply for Coursera financial aid on the course you have chosen before starting it; approval can take up to about two weeks.
- Programmers: start fast.ai lesson one and publish your first notebook on Kaggle or GitHub within 30 days.
- UWI, UTech and NCU students: build one project on Jamaican data this semester and put it on GitHub with a short write-up; bring it to every interview.
- Business owners: pick one weekly task, run it with an AI assistant for a month, and record the time saved before paying for any AI product.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a Coursera certificate without paying?
Apply for financial aid on the specific course page before you start. You answer a short application about your finances and goals, and approval usually takes up to about two weeks. Aid is granted per course, so apply for each one separately. Some courses and professional certificates also run periodic free-access promotions through their sponsors, which are worth checking.
Will a free online certificate get me an AI job in Jamaica?
On its own, rarely. Employers here look for evidence you can do the work: a project on real data, published on GitHub or Kaggle, that you can explain in an interview. Use certificates to show you completed structured study, and put the projects first on your CV and LinkedIn profile.
Can I learn AI with only a phone?
You can do the first stage on a phone: Elements of AI, Google AI Essentials, YouTube lessons and daily use of AI assistants all work on mobile. Writing and running code is hard on a small screen, so for Python and machine learning you will need a laptop or a desktop. Public library and school computer labs are an option if you do not own one; Google Colab runs in a browser on modest hardware.
What maths should I revise before a machine learning course?
Revise four areas: basic statistics (mean, variance, probability and distributions), algebra with functions and graphs, vectors and matrices, and the idea of a derivative as a rate of change. Khan Academy covers all four free. You do not need to finish all of it first; revise each topic when a course reaches it.
How do I check whether a paid AI course or bootcamp is worth it?
Ask for the syllabus, the instructor's own work, and contact details of two past students you can speak to. Compare the syllabus with the free courses in this guide; if most of it overlaps, the free route is enough. Be wary of any course that promises a job, a salary figure or a certificate from a body you cannot find independently.
