I have been watching Claude Code closely since Anthropic released it. Not as a casual observer. As someone who has spent 15 years building AI systems and who runs multiple technology companies across the Caribbean - including StarApple AI, the Caribbean's First AI Company. I have a very specific interest in what AI coding tools mean for the region I am building in.
The short answer: Claude Code is the most significant thing to happen to the Caribbean developer in a very long time. Let me explain what I mean by that, and why I think the people who dismiss AI coding tools as "just autocomplete" are going to be left behind.
What Claude Code Actually Is
Claude Code is Anthropic's AI coding tool - not an IDE plugin, not a suggestion engine bolted onto your editor, but an agentic system that can read your entire codebase, understand its architecture, write multi-file changes, run tests, debug errors, and ship working code. You describe what you want. It builds it.
This is qualitatively different from earlier coding assistants. The difference is not just capability - it is the level of understanding. Claude Code does not complete lines. It comprehends systems. It can look at a Django application, understand the data models, the views, the serializers, the authentication flow, and then make a meaningful change to any part of it without breaking the rest. That is not autocomplete. That is a junior engineer - a very fast, very tireless one who never needs to ask where the bathroom is.
Why This Matters for the Caribbean
Let me be direct about the Caribbean developer's situation. We are talented, we are creative, and we are severely under-resourced. The average Caribbean startup does not have the runway to hire four engineers. It has the founder, maybe a co-founder, and a burning conviction that they can build something important.
Claude Code changes the calculus for that founder dramatically.
I have seen Caribbean entrepreneurs spend months building basic infrastructure - authentication systems, payment integrations, data pipelines - that Claude Code can scaffold in hours. That time is not a trivial saving. For a bootstrapped Caribbean startup operating without Silicon Valley capital, months of engineering time is the difference between launching and dying.
But the impact goes deeper than speed. Claude Code gives Caribbean developers access to a quality of technical feedback that most of them do not have locally. If you are building AI in Kingston or Port of Spain or Bridgetown, your peer network may be limited. Your ability to get a code review from a senior engineer with experience in distributed systems or machine learning pipelines may be constrained by geography and cost. Claude Code is not a perfect substitute for that expertise - but it is a meaningful one. It can review your code and tell you what is wrong with it. That is not nothing. For a lot of Caribbean developers, that is everything.
How I Use It at StarApple AI
At StarApple AI and across our labs, we have integrated Claude Code into research and development workflows for exactly this reason. When our team is prototyping AI models - building data pipelines, cleaning training sets, constructing evaluation frameworks - Claude Code handles the scaffolding while our engineers focus on the parts that require domain expertise and contextual judgment.
The Section 9 AI Lab used it extensively during research projects requiring rapid prototyping across different modalities. Maestro AI Labs uses it to accelerate pre-seed product development. The result is not fewer engineers. The result is engineers who ship at a fundamentally different pace.
I want to be honest about something: Claude Code requires skill to use well. The Caribbean developer who does not understand what they are asking for will get code that technically runs but architecturally fails. The tool amplifies competence. It does not manufacture it. This is why our commitment to AI education - seven years of free weekly training - matters more than ever. You need to understand AI to direct it effectively. The Caribbean developers who invest in that understanding will operate at an entirely different level from those who do not.
The Competitive Implication
Here is the strategic reality I want Caribbean founders and developers to sit with: the productivity gap between a developer using Claude Code well and one not using it at all is now enormous. A well-directed Claude Code session can produce a week of basic development work in an afternoon. Over a year, that compounds into a structural advantage that no amount of late nights can close.
This means the Caribbean has a narrow window to close the gap between what our developers can build and what developers in well-funded Silicon Valley or London startups can build. Claude Code is one of the best tools available for closing it. But the window will not stay open. Every month that passes, the developers using these tools are getting better at using them. The learning curve becomes their moat.
Use it. Learn it. Build with it. The Caribbean's AI moment is now - and Claude Code is one of the sharpest instruments available to build with.
"Claude Code is not just an AI coding tool. For the Caribbean developer, it is a strategic equaliser - and the window to use it as one will not stay open forever." - Adrian Dunkley
Getting Started
If you are a Caribbean developer who has not yet explored Claude Code, start with a real project - not a toy. Take something you are actually building and let Claude Code work on it with you. Be specific in your instructions. Describe the architecture, the constraints, the desired outcome. Review every line it produces. You will learn as much from reviewing it as from writing it yourself.
And come back and tell me what you built. The Caribbean's AI story is written by the people building things - and I want to know every word of it.
