Your child will grow up with AI the way you grew up with the internet. Shutting it out is neither possible nor wise, and letting it in with no rules is worse. This framework gives parents a simple structure: three questions that settle most decisions, an age-band guide from the youngest children to teenagers, household rules you can agree at the dinner table, and clear guardrails for safety, privacy, and healthy independence. Two interactive tools help you decide what is right for your own child. You can start tonight.
1. The situation, without the panic
Two things are true at once, and holding both is the whole job. AI is genuinely useful. A child can use it to practise a language, understand a hard idea explained three different ways, get unstuck on homework, or make something they are proud of. AI also carries real risks that have nothing to do with robots taking over. A chatbot will state a wrong answer with total confidence. It can surface content a child is not ready for. It quietly collects whatever personal information a child types in. And for some children it can slide into the place a friend should hold.
Notice that none of those risks require a doomsday story. They are ordinary parenting problems in a new form: accuracy, exposure, privacy, and relationships. You have handled versions of all four before. The point of a framework is to give you the same calm footing here that you already have with television, phones, and the front door.
The research that exists points in one consistent direction. Children do better with AI when a parent is nearby, when the device is shared rather than private, and when the family has talked about it. The single strongest protection is not a piece of software. It is a parent who has opened the tool, tried it, and stayed curious enough to keep the conversation going.
2. The framework: three questions and a ladder
The heart of this framework is three questions you can ask about any moment your child wants to use AI. If you remember nothing else, remember these.
The second half of the framework is a ladder. A five-year-old and a fifteen-year-old need different things, and pretending otherwise is how families end up with rules that fit no one. Think in age bands, each one adding a rung of independence as the child earns it.
3. What to do at each age
Under 7. No accounts, no solo use. At this age AI is something you do together, for wonder, not for answers. Ask an image tool to draw the silliest animal your child can invent. Let them dictate a bedtime story and laugh at what comes back. The lesson at this age is simple and lasting: the computer is a toy we control, and grown-ups are in the room.
Ages 7 to 10. Side by side, on a shared device in a shared space. Your child can start using AI to explore questions they are curious about, with you next to them. This is the age to plant the first seed of scepticism. When the tool answers, ask out loud: do we think that is true? How could we check? You are teaching that AI is confident but not always right, which is the single most valuable idea a child can carry forward.
Ages 11 to 13. Supervised practice, with rules written down. Many children this age want to use AI for homework, and this is where habits set for life. Draw the line clearly: AI is for checking your work, explaining what you did not understand, and quizzing you before a test. It is not for producing work you hand in as your own. Keep the device in a common area, keep accounts under a parent's email where the service allows, and keep talking.
Ages 14 and up. Guided independence. A teenager needs room to use these tools the way they will as an adult, and your job shifts from gatekeeper to coach. Talk about the harder things now: that AI can sound like a friend but is not one, that anything typed in is not private, that a confident answer can still be wrong, and that using AI to skip the thinking is a debt that comes due at exam time. Trust extended with honest conversation beats control that invites hiding.
The tool below lets you pick your child's age band and see the recommended posture change. It is a starting point for a conversation, not a verdict. You know your child better than any framework does.
4. Household rules you can agree tonight
Rules a child helped write are rules a child keeps. Sit down together and agree a short list. Here is a starter set that works in most homes. Cross out what does not fit yours and add what does.
- AI lives in the open. We use it on shared devices in shared spaces, not alone behind a closed door.
- We never tell it who we are. No full name, school, address, photo, or phone number goes into a chatbot, ever.
- We check before we trust. If it matters, we confirm what AI says with a real source or a real adult.
- It helps us think, it does not think for us. AI can check our work and explain things. It does not do the work we are meant to learn from.
- People come first. A chatbot is not a friend. When something is bothering us, we talk to a person we trust.
- We tell a grown-up if it gets weird. If AI says something scary, mean, or strange, we come and tell you, and no one is in trouble for asking.
The last rule is the most important one. A child who believes they will be punished for what a chatbot said will hide it. A child who believes you will help will bring it to you. Make it completely safe to tell you, and you have built the guardrail that catches everything the others miss.
5. The guardrails that matter
Accuracy. The habit to build is checking, not fearing. Sit with your child, ask the tool something you already know the answer to, and let them catch it being wrong. A child who has personally watched AI get a fact wrong will never again treat it as an oracle. That one experience is worth more than any lecture.
Exposure. Use the parental controls and the child or teen modes the major services now offer, keep use in shared spaces, and know that no filter is perfect. The backstop is the open conversation, not the setting. A child who can tell you what they saw is safer than a child behind the strictest filter who cannot.
Privacy. Teach the one-line rule until it is automatic: the chatbot is a stranger, and we do not tell strangers our private things. Make a game of spotting what should never be typed in. Privacy learned as a reflex at nine is a shield that protects them at nineteen.
Healthy independence. Watch for the tool becoming a substitute rather than a support: for friendship, for effort, for the productive struggle that learning requires. The signal to watch is not how much time your child spends with AI, it is what it is replacing. If it is replacing boredom that would have become a wrong answer they learned from, or a conversation they needed to have, gently steer back. Struggle is not a bug in childhood. It is where the growth happens.

6. What good looks like
You will know the framework is working not when your child uses AI less, but when they use it well without being told. When they catch it in a mistake and grin. When they stop themselves before typing in a real name. When they come to you because a chatbot said something odd, sure that you will help rather than punish. When they reach for a friend instead of a screen for the things that need a friend. That is the goal. Not a child kept away from AI, but a child who can walk into a world full of it with judgement, honesty, and the confidence that you are in their corner.
