Free AI Training for Jamaicans: Every Resource You Need in 2026

Adrian Dunkley March 2026 12 min read

I have been running free AI training in Jamaica every week for seven years. That is not a typo. Every week, for over 350 weeks, I have offered free AI education to anyone who wants to learn. I started because I believed that the biggest barrier to AI adoption in Jamaica was not technology or money. It was knowledge. That belief has been confirmed every single week by the people who show up.

This guide is the resource I wish I could hand to every Jamaican who has ever asked me, "Where do I start with AI?" It covers everything available to you in 2026, from my own free program to international platforms, university courses, and government-supported training. I have organized it by your starting point, because a UWI computer science graduate needs a different path than a BPO worker looking to upskill or a business owner trying to understand what AI can do.

Start Here: Free AI Training in Jamaica

Adrian Dunkley's Free Weekly AI Training

I will start with my own program because it is the most accessible AI training available in Jamaica, and because I know exactly what it offers. Every week, I run a free AI training session open to anyone regardless of technical background. The sessions cover everything from "What is AI and why should you care?" for absolute beginners to practical AI tool usage, machine learning concepts, and AI business applications for more advanced participants.

Over seven years, this program has reached thousands of Jamaicans. I have trained teachers, bankers, farmers, students, government workers, entrepreneurs, and retirees. The consistent feedback is that the sessions make AI understandable and practical rather than abstract and intimidating.

The sessions are accessible online, which means you can participate from anywhere in Jamaica with an internet connection. There is no registration fee, no prerequisite, and no catch. I do this because I believe that AI literacy is the single most important skill for Jamaica's economic future, and I believe education should not be behind a paywall.

To join, connect with me through StarApple AI at starappleai.org or find me on LinkedIn.

The Genius Project

The Genius Project is another Jamaican initiative focused on technology education, including AI and data science components. It targets young Jamaicans and provides structured learning paths in technology skills. The Genius Project represents the kind of grassroots technology education effort that Jamaica needs more of, programs that meet learners where they are and give them practical skills they can use immediately.

International Online Platforms (All Free from Jamaica)

The internet has democratized AI education. You can access the same AI courses from Kingston that a student in San Francisco or London can access. Here are the platforms that offer the best free AI education, tested and verified for accessibility from Jamaica.

Google AI Learning Resources

Google offers a substantial free AI education program. The Google AI Essentials course covers fundamental AI concepts, prompt engineering, and practical AI tool usage. Google also provides free courses on TensorFlow (Google's machine learning framework), responsible AI practices, and generative AI fundamentals. These courses are well-structured, beginner-friendly, and come with certificates of completion.

For Jamaicans, Google's courses are particularly valuable because they are designed for people who may not have a computer science background. A marketing professional, a teacher, or a small business owner can complete Google's AI Essentials course and come away with practical understanding of how to use AI tools effectively.

IBM SkillsBuild

IBM SkillsBuild is one of the most underappreciated free learning platforms available to Jamaicans. It offers free courses in AI fundamentals, data science, cloud computing, and cybersecurity. IBM has been an active technology partner in Jamaica for decades, and their SkillsBuild platform extends that relationship to education.

The AI courses on IBM SkillsBuild cover machine learning basics, natural language processing, computer vision, and AI ethics. They are self-paced, free, and include digital badges that you can add to your LinkedIn profile. For someone building an AI career in Jamaica, IBM badges carry recognition with employers.

As an IBM Global AI Mentor, I can tell you that IBM's educational commitment is genuine. The quality of the SkillsBuild content is high, and the platform is regularly updated to reflect current AI developments.

Coursera (Free Audit Mode)

Coursera hosts AI courses from Stanford, MIT, Google, IBM, and other top institutions. Here is what most people do not know: you can audit almost any Coursera course for free. Auditing gives you access to all the video lectures and reading materials. You only pay if you want the certificate.

The essential courses for a Jamaican starting in AI on Coursera are Andrew Ng's Machine Learning Specialization (the gold standard introduction to ML), the Google Data Analytics Professional Certificate (free to audit), and the IBM AI Engineering Professional Certificate (free to audit). Each of these will give you world-class AI education at zero cost.

edX

edX offers a similar model to Coursera, with free audit access to courses from Harvard, MIT, Columbia, and other universities. Notable AI courses on edX include Harvard's CS50 Introduction to AI with Python, Microsoft's Professional Program in AI, and several data science courses. The audit mode is free, and the quality is university-level.

fast.ai

fast.ai deserves special mention because it takes a fundamentally different approach to AI education. Founded by Jeremy Howard, fast.ai teaches practical deep learning from the top down, starting with making things work and then explaining the theory afterward. Their Practical Deep Learning for Coders course is entirely free and has been called the best free AI course in the world by multiple reviewers.

fast.ai is best suited for people who already know some programming. If you know basic Python, you can start fast.ai and be building working deep learning models within weeks. For Jamaicans with programming experience who want to add AI to their skillset quickly, fast.ai is the highest-return investment of learning time available.

Microsoft Learn

Microsoft Learn offers free, self-paced learning paths for Azure AI services, machine learning fundamentals, and AI-900 (Azure AI Fundamentals) certification preparation. The learning materials are free. The certification exam itself has a fee, but the knowledge you gain from the learning path is valuable regardless of whether you take the exam.

YouTube

I am going to be honest: YouTube has some of the best AI education content available anywhere, and it is completely free. Channels like 3Blue1Brown (excellent visual explanations of neural networks and linear algebra), Sentdex (practical Python and ML tutorials), and StatQuest (statistics and ML concepts explained clearly) provide world-class education. The challenge with YouTube is curation. There is also a lot of low-quality content. Stick with established channels with strong reputations.

University Programs in Jamaica

University of the West Indies (UWI)

UWI's Department of Computing at the Mona campus offers the most structured AI education pathway in Jamaica's university system. Computer science students at UWI can take courses in machine learning, data science, and artificial intelligence. The IMPACT AI Lab at UWI provides research opportunities that go beyond classroom learning, giving students hands-on experience with real AI projects.

UWI's AI education is good and getting better. The challenge has been keeping pace with the speed at which AI is evolving. University curriculum development cycles are measured in years, and AI is changing in months. UWI has responded by supplementing traditional courses with guest lectures from industry practitioners, workshop-style learning, and partnerships with organizations like StarApple AI that bring current industry practice into the classroom.

If you are a UWI student, my specific advice: take the formal AI and ML courses offered by the Department of Computing, supplement them with online courses from the platforms listed above, get involved with the IMPACT AI Lab, and build projects. Your degree matters, but your portfolio of working AI projects matters more to employers.

University of Technology (UTech)

UTech offers technology programs that include data science and programming components relevant to AI careers. UTech's practical orientation makes it well-suited for producing graduates who can apply AI tools in business and industry contexts rather than purely research settings.

Northern Caribbean University (NCU)

NCU's information technology programs provide foundational skills in computing and data management. While NCU does not yet have a dedicated AI program, its IT graduates have the foundational skills needed to transition into AI with additional specialized training.

Government-Supported Training

HEART/NSTA Trust

HEART/NSTA Trust is Jamaica's national training agency, and it has been expanding its technology training offerings. While HEART does not yet offer a dedicated AI certification program, its information technology and software development courses provide the foundational skills that AI training builds on. HEART has partnerships with international certification bodies that include technology certifications, and AI-specific offerings are in development.

For Jamaicans without university education who want to enter the technology field, HEART provides an accessible pathway. Starting with HEART's IT fundamentals and then adding AI-specific skills through online platforms is a realistic and affordable career development strategy.

JAMPRO Technology Programs

JAMPRO, Jamaica's trade and investment agency, has facilitated technology training programs as part of its BPO and technology sector development work. These programs occasionally include AI and data science components, particularly when linked to specific industry needs.

The Hard Truth About AI Learning

I want to be honest about something that most AI training guides skip over. Learning AI requires effort and persistence. The free resources I have listed above are genuinely world-class, but they only work if you actually do them. I have seen too many Jamaicans start an AI course with enthusiasm, get to the first challenging concept, and stop.

AI involves mathematics. Not advanced mathematics for most practical applications, but statistics, linear algebra, and calculus concepts that many people find intimidating. Do not let that stop you. The mathematics in AI is learnable. It is not harder than what a UWI first-year science student encounters. And for many practical AI applications, you can use AI effectively without deep mathematical understanding, just as you can drive a car without understanding thermodynamics.

The other hard truth is that internet access in Jamaica, while improving, is still a barrier for some people. If you are in a rural area with unreliable internet, downloading course materials when you have connectivity and studying offline is a practical workaround. Many Coursera and YouTube courses can be downloaded for offline viewing.

Do not let perfect be the enemy of good. Start with whatever resources you can access. Start with my free weekly sessions. Start with a Google course on your phone. Start somewhere. The Jamaicans who will thrive in the AI economy are not the ones who waited for perfect conditions. They are the ones who started learning with whatever they had.

I have been teaching AI for free in Jamaica for seven years because I believe that knowledge should not have a price tag. The resources exist. The only question is whether you will use them.
